FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Montgomery County Government
Now Accepting Mayor’s Emerging Leaders Applications

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. – Applications for the 2025-2026 Montgomery County Mayor’s Emerging Leaders (MEL) Program are now open and will be accepted until May 19, 2025.

MEL is for local high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors interested in learning how local government works through participation in committee meetings and activities. Meetings with students begin in August 2025 and end in January 2026.

“This program allows students to engage with county government and gain a deeper understanding of what is happening in government at a local level. I really enjoy having the students join our committees and meetings. We actively encourage them to ask questions, and they often show a genuine curiosity about the topics we discuss. Their unique perspective brings up valuable insights that can benefit us,” said Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden.

The MEL program provides high school students with a fundamental understanding of how different aspects of county government work. Students interested in the program select committees to engage with, and all students are encouraged to attend budget committee meetings.

Applications for the 2025-2026 Mayor’s Emerging Leaders Program are available on the Montgomery County Communications Department page or by emailing Valerie Linares at [email protected].

Beloved NEHS staff Venetia Jones

Dear Eagle Family,

I am reaching out with a heavy heart to share the heartbreaking news of the sudden passing Tuesday, April 15 of one of our beloved staff members, Venetia Jones. I have spoken with Ms. Jones’ family and shared that they are in the thoughts and prayers of the entire Northeast High School community during this incredibly difficult time.

Mrs. Jones was more than a colleague—she was a cherished member of our school family and a steady, compassionate presence in our community. Her impact on students and staff alike was profound, and her absence will be deeply felt. She was a friend, a mentor, a family member to all of us. A difficult day always became easier with the smile Mrs. Jones had on her face, and the smile she could bring to others. Along with the smile came a laugh that would brighten the day of so many of us!

We understand this loss is difficult for many to process. Our school counselors and social workers will be available to support any student, faculty, or staff member who would like someone to talk to during this difficult time. We also encourage families to be attentive to their child’s emotional well-being and to help create space for conversations about grief and healing.

This is a time for us to lean on each other. We are here for our students, our staff, and our families, and we are committed to walking through this together.

Dr. Bradley Hutson

Congratulations to these amazing technology students in their recent conference.

This past weekend we had 16 students compete in 16 different events at the Tennessee Technology Student Association State Leadership Conference.  Overall this group performed well and was very helpful in helping set up, run, and tear down the VEX Robotics event.  Here are the results:

1st place in Coding: Ethan W., Jonathan M.

Architectural Design: Jordan K., Joseph S.

Board Game Design: Knya T., Dominic W.
